The Problem
After conducting user research, interviews, and data analysis, we identified several key challenges:
- Complex interface: Many students found the SudoStudy interface overwhelming and difficult to navigate.
- Hidden features: Key tools such as study scheduling, personal notes, and learning analytics were hard to find or underutilized.
- Lack of personalization: The learning experience felt generic and didn’t adapt to different student needs or learning styles.
- Low engagement: Average student session time had dropped by 23% in the last 3 months.
One of the core issues we identified was visual and functional inconsistency across different parts of the platform. From the dashboard to quizzes, each section seemed to follow its own design logic—resulting in cognitive overload for students.
To address this, we introduced the Unity Design System: a centralized design framework built specifically for SudoStudy to ensure consistency, scalability, and accessibility.
Key Elements of the Unity Design System:
- Unified Components
We created reusable UI components (buttons, cards, navigation bars, inputs) with consistent spacing, typography, and color schemes to reduce visual noise and improve recognition. - Accessible Design Principles
All components were designed with accessibility in mind—ensuring proper contrast ratios, keyboard navigability, and screen reader support for inclusive learning. - Learning-Focused Layouts
We prioritized layouts that aligned with natural student workflows: clear progression indicators, simplified navigation, and distraction-free study environments. - Personalized UI Tokens
Using UI tokens, the interface dynamically adjusts to users’ preferences such as font size, light/dark themes, and even layout preferences (grid vs list views).
Impact of the Unity Design System:
- 38% reduction in time spent navigating between tasks
- 52% increase in use of previously hidden features (e.g., note-taking and study plans)
- Positive feedback on the platform’s “cleaner” and “more modern” look from 82% of surveyed students
